Patrick "Pax" McCarthy is the Assistant Director of the sign language interpretation program and lecturer of American Sign Language at UNH Manchester. He is also the advisor to the student sign language club at UNH Manchester. McCarthy is noted for his innovative ASL classroom communication activities.
McCarthy is a native user of American Sign Language (ASL) for his parents were culturally Deaf. He attended Maryland School for the Deaf. He earned a BA degree in psychology from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. and an M.S. degree in deaf education from McDaniel College (formerly known as Western Maryland College).
He co-founded a local Boston Deaf Theatre, known as Show of Hands Theatre Company (SOHTC), and has been active in various capacities such as Board member, Playwright/Directing, and Lighting. Beside SOHTC, he consulted Sign Language Interpreters with translation in various professional theatres’ plays in Boston, such as Les Miserables, Les Liasiones Dangerouses, Anne Frank, The Blue Demon, and many others.
