The Elementary Education M.Ed. program at UNH Manchester is committed to preparing teachers for culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse schools.

UNH teacher education students have numerous opportunities to complete practica, projects, and internships in diverse urban classrooms and schools. Issues related to the challenges and rewards of serving in diverse schools are woven into the teacher preparation courses.

Students also have numerous opportunities to participate in and contribute to the professional knowledge base through public conference presentations, organizing community panels, and/or organizing after school professional development sessions for colleagues at public schools.

The teacher education program is focused on preparing teacher-leaders. These are teachers who are not only excellent practitioners, but teachers who work toward improving education in and beyond their own classrooms.

Applications must be completed by the following deadlines in order to be reviewed for admission

  • Fall Admission: April 15
  • Spring Admission: November 1
  • Summer Admission: April 15
  • Special: Students who plan to begin their internship Fall semester, must have a completed Graduate School application by March 1st and have taken all prerequisite coursework.

Applicants for financial assistance should complete their applications by February 15 to ensure consideration for the following academic year. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications should be sent directly to the Dean of the Graduate School.

Teacher Education Graduate Programs Admission Criteria

  • The undergraduate overall minimum grade point average for admission is 3.0.  The undergraduate grade point average of students admitted to the graduate programs in teacher education is approximately 3.52 (based on 2016 admissions).
  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) exam scores are required. Applicants must obtain, at a minimum, a qualifying score (as set by the state of New Hampshire at the time of testing) on all three (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) Core exams in order to be considered for admission. Current NH qualifying scores may be found at the ETS Praxis Website under the “Tests required for all licensure areas” page.
  • Positive recommendations from EDUC 500, Exploring Teaching, EDUC 935 or the equivalent and from those able to relay information about a candidate's performance in teaching situations or related areas.
  • Positive recommendations regarding academic ability, motivation, and interpersonal skills.

In our admission process, we seek evidence that our students have the following knowledge, abilities, and dispositions:

  • motives to teach that include a strong social commitment to contribute to society through education;
  • a disposition to care for their students-each and every one;
  • an ability to interact positively with children and adults;
  • a capacity to win the respect of their peers and be effective in group interaction, showing openness to the needs and views of others;
  • well-developed communication skills, including speaking, writing, and listening skills as well as an ability to engage others in both the giving and receiving of information and feelings;
  • perceptiveness-the ability to identify and process the relevant details in their environment, especially in the context of a classroom;
  • the ability to make reasonable judgments in a context of complex situations that change from moment to moment;
  • the capacity for clear thinking and an ability to translate their thoughts into simple and clear explanations;
  • superior academic skills, extensive knowledge of at least one major discipline, intellectual curiosity, the ability to be open to the unknown;
  • a disposition to take charge of their own learning, which includes the active pursuit of feedback and the willingness to take thoughtful risks.

Preparing Teacher Leaders for Better Schools

The teacher education program is focused on preparing teacher-leaders. These are teachers who are not only excellent practitioners but teachers who work toward improving education in and beyond their own classrooms.

To achieve classroom excellence we are committed to the five core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. We select and prepare teachers who:

  • are committed to students and their learning,
  • know their subject areas and how to teach those subjects to students,
  • are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning,
  • think systematically about their practice and learn from experience, and
  • are active members of learning communities.

Building directly from these original core propositions, we have articulated seven program goals with supporting outcomes that guide our selection and preparation of teachers. Our graduates are:

  • knowledgeable in the subjects they teach,
  • committed to knowing their students and cultivating a community of learners,
  • know how to teach subject matter to students,
  • know how to effectively monitor student learning,
  • thoughtful and reflective practitioners who learn from experience,
  • understand the nature of school reform and their roles as agents of change, and
  • active members of learning and professional communities.

The Elementary Education program requires 32 graduate level credits


12 credits of internship plus 20 additional credits. Of the 20 additional credits at the graduate level, 10 must be in education and 10 can either be in education or in another department. Please note: not all required courses are offered at the Manchester campus, so travel to the Durham campus may be required.

Admission to the M.Ed. is competitive and requires submission of an application to the UNH Graduate School. This includes official transcripts, scores from the Praxis Core exam, personal statement and three letters of recommendations.  Thirty-two (32) Graduate credits are the minimum for this degree.

The two-semester supervised school internship is required for licensure. It typically runs from September through May, six graduate credits each semester. The internship MUST begin in the fall semester and be completed in the spring semester. A Portfolio/concluding experience is required as part of the internship.

Based on satisfactory performance in the first semester internship, post-baccalaureate candidates with current certification may petition for exemption from the second semester internship. The decision to grant the petition will be made by the Director of Educator Preparation in collaboration with the intern, cooperating teacher, and UNH supervisor.

Manchester Mandatory Fees

  • Registration Fee: A non-refundable registration fee will be assessed once each semester.
  • Technology Fee: A technology fee will be assessed each semester.
  • Manchester Parking/Security Fee: A mandatory security/parking fee is assessed to all registered students at the UNH Graduate School Manchester Campus. This fee will be assessed once each semester and will entitle the student to a parking permit. UNH Manchester parking passes can be used in the “A” lot of the Durham Campus.

Health Insurance Fee

UNH has a HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENT as a condition of enrollment for all full-time (9 or more credits per traditional semester) graduate degree students. Students will have the option of waiving the requirement by presenting proof of adequate insurance through another plan. Students who want to waive out of the plan are required to complete the enrollment/waiver form and should do so before the start of classes. The UNH Teacher Education program is for current or prospective undergraduate students who are interested in becoming a teacher. Diligent students have the ability to earn both their bachelor's and master's degrees in as little as five years* through the Accelerated Master's Program. The GPA for the Accelerated Master’s is 3.2.

This program is an integrated undergraduate-graduate program culminating in a fifth year, year-long internship. Before the internship, students earn a bachelor's degree in one of our current undergraduate degree programs.
