CAE tutor session

Working as a peer tutor for the Center for Academic Enrichment is a great option for many talented UNH Manchester students. As a tutor, you:

  • Meet and help your fellow UNH Manchester students
  • Earn competitive hourly pay that rises with increased levels of training and certification
  • Build your resume for work in any field
  • Receive professional certification from the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession
  • Improve your own academic skills
  • Receive close mentoring and build a network with CAE professional staff and tutors

The CAE also offers the opportunity to work as an English speakers of other languages (ESOL) Tutor in local area high schools. Tutors will assist English language learners (ELL) in coordination with high school classroom teachers, or one-on-one in the high school’s ELL resource room.  ESOL Tutors may also have the opportunity to work with adult and middle school students during the summer UNH Manchester ESOL and EXCELL programs. 

To work as a peer tutor, you must do the following:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Earn a B+ or above in all courses you plan to tutor
  • Be willing and able to enroll in the course UMST 521 - Tutor Development for 3 credits
  • Commit a minimum of five hours a week to tutoring
  • Complete the Tutor Application (see How do I Apply? below)
  • Receive a recommendation from a UNH Manchester faculty member
  • Interview with the CAE Professional staff

Math tutors must have fulfilled the Quantitative Reasoning requirement.

Writing tutors must have completed English 401.

Biology and Chemistry tutors must have taken the course they would like to tutor at UNH Manchester.

To work as an ESOL Tutor, you must do the following:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0  
  • Pass state mandated background check 
  • Attend mandatory Tutor Orientation each semester 
  • Attend mandatory 3-day workshop training each May 

The CAE usually starts new groups of Peer and ESOL tutors at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. We accept applications for each of these cohorts on a rolling basis. To apply, please:

  • Complete the Tutor Application or the ESOL Tutor Application. In the application you will be asked to:
    •  Provide the email of a UNH Manchester faculty member who is familiar with your skills and the content area to recommend you
    •  Submit a 5-10 page writing sample (not required for math or computer tutors)
    •  Provide your most current resume
