A Pathway to Medicine

For Madison McLaughlin ’23, transferring to UNH Manchester from Nashua Community College was a strategic choice. The Merrimack High School alum sought a rigorous biological sciences program with hands-on learning opportunities while maintaining the flexibility to balance her studies with full-time and part-time jobs.
“UNH Manchester offered the perfect blend of a traditional college experience with real-world application and a strong sense of community,” Madison says. “The smaller class sizes allowed for one-on-one time with professors, and the convenience of being close to home enabled me to save money while pursuing my education.”
Her goal was clear: to enter the medical field. With a passion for understanding the complexities of the human body, she pursued a pre-med track, eager to gain knowledge that would prepare her for medical school.
From Internships to the Operating Room
Madison took charge of her education by proactively seeking internships and research opportunities that would complement her coursework. Her hands-on experiences ranged from shadowing physicians in emergency departments to interning with the Chief Medical Examiner, where she observed autopsies and laboratory analyses. She also worked as a Medical Technologist in a Microbiology Laboratory and is now a Cardiac Anesthesia Technician, assisting anesthesiologists and surgeons in cardiovascular procedures.
“These experiences allowed me to connect with medical professionals and gain direct patient care exposure,” Madison explains. “UNH Manchester encouraged me to take the initiative, which ultimately led me to these incredible opportunities.”
Beyond the Classroom
One of the most rewarding aspects of Madison’s time at UNH Manchester was her opportunity to study abroad. Living with a host family in Spain, she experienced the culture head-on, learned Spanish and formed lifelong connections.
“They became family to me, and I still keep in touch with them,” she says. “Traveling across Europe gave me a global perspective that I will carry with me into my medical career.”
Pursuing the Next Chapter
After earning her degree from UNH Manchester, Madison continued her education by enrolling in an MBA program with a focus on Healthcare Management, set to graduate in May. She is preparing to apply to medical schools, using the skills she developed in both her undergraduate and graduate studies to position herself for a future in healthcare.
“My time at UNH Manchester taught me how to balance school, work, and life while staying dedicated to my goals,” she says. “It also reinforced that everyone’s journey is different and that perseverance is key.”
