Voices of UNH Manchester Wildcats Series: Meet Mechanical Engineering Technology Major, Kieran McCurdy, '25

Kieran McCurdy

Are you considering a future in mechanical engineering technology? Meet Kieran McCurdy, class of '25 at UNH Manchester, whose journey offers a firsthand look at the value of this dynamic program. Whether you’re a prospective student or simply curious about what makes UNH Manchester stand out, Kieran’s experience highlights the unique opportunities, hands-on learning, and career advantages waiting for you.

Why Kieran Chose UNH Manchester

For Kieran, the decision to attend UNH Manchester was driven by the program’s practical focus and its strong industry connections. He shares,

“UNH Manchester is a hub for all these different companies. When you graduate, there are all these job opportunities that you can go into.”

The campus’s location in the heart of Manchester, NH, puts students close to leading engineering firms and tech companies, opening doors to internships, networking, and career placement right after graduation.

What Classes Are Like

Kieran’s experience in the mechanical engineering technology program is marked by a diverse curriculum and hands-on learning. He explains,

“My favorite thing about the mechanical engineering technology program at UNH Manchester is the array of classes you take. I get to learn about thermodynamics, electrical, and mechanical stresses all in one degree.”

This means students gain expertise across multiple engineering disciplines, preparing them for a wide range of careers.

Classes at UNH Manchester teach students not only theory; they also show them how to apply their knowledge in real-world situations. Kieran notes,

“I’m taking a 3D printing class. With this class, I’ve been able to level up my 3D printing skills because I’m able to think more critically about the way I design.”

The program’s modern facilities, including advanced labs and equipment, further support this hands-on approach.

Highlights from Kieran’s Mechanical Engineering Technology Journey

One of the highlights of Kieran’s journey was the capstone project, where he worked alongside fellow students to build robots. He explains, “You work on a team with three to four engineers, and you’re building robots. You’re required to make three 3D printed parts per robot and three machine parts per robot.” The project culminates in a friendly competition that lets students test their creations and celebrate their achievements. This experience encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving.

Hands-On Learning and Internships

Kieran’s time at UNH Manchester has been filled with opportunities to apply his skills in real-world settings. As an automation intern at Freudenberg, Kerian gained valuable exposure: "We had an inspection machine there. I worked on the wire diagram for that machine," he shares. These internships, made possible by the campus’s industry connections, help students build their resumes and prepare for the workforce.

10:1 Student to Faculty Ratio

Beyond the curriculum, Kieran appreciates the small class sizes and the collaborative environment. Faculty are invested in student success, and peers share a passion for innovation and problem-solving. The campus’s supportive community and access to advanced technology make it an ideal place to grow as an engineer.

Looking Ahead: Kieran’s Future Plans

Graduates of the mechanical engineering technology program at UNH Manchester often go into the following fields:

  • Advanced manufacturing and process engineering
  • Aerospace and defense
  • Automation and robotics
  • Machine design
  • Manufacturing and industrial engineering
  • Ocean engineering
  • Power generation and renewable energy
  • Project management
  • Thermal sciences
  • Transportation engineering

As graduation approaches, Kieran is confident in his path.

“After I graduate, I plan on working as a process engineer. I want to work at either BAE or DEKA because these are companies that are at the forefront and are located right next to UNH Manchester.”

He credits the program for giving him the practical skills needed to succeed: “I got those practical skills that I need to work as a process engineer.”
