Meet Your Fall 2025 Orientation Leaders: Summer Shifflett ’26

At UNH Manchester, our Peer Leaders are both friendly faces during Orientation as well as mentors, role models and community-builders who help new students feel at home from day one. This week, meet Summer Shifflett, a Biological Sciences major, Dean’s List student, and campus leader whose journey proves the power of passion and support.
What brought you to UNH Manchester?
UNH Manchester was close enough to home that it didn’t feel so daunting, yet offered the resources and opportunities of an R1 research university. The close-knit, vibrant community has had my back throughout the years. I’ve had no doubts—UNH Manchester was the right choice for me!
What campus resource has helped you the most and why?
Campus tutoring has helped me excel in classes I struggled with. I spent whole semesters in weekly sessions, and the trained, talented tutors helped me find my strengths and improve where I needed it most. They’ve been a huge part of my academic success.
Is there a professor who’s made a big impact on you?
In my freshman year, one of my professors noticed how much I loved marine science—because she did too! She’s encouraged me ever since, even helping me find an internship. This summer, I’m doing fieldwork on a boat with the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. I’m literally working in the field I love, and I couldn’t have done it without her.
Outside the classroom…
Summer brings her leadership skills to life both on and off campus. She’s a student tour guide at Scenic RailRiders, where she welcomes visitors and creates memorable experiences. She’s also earned the Dean's List – High Honors and the Student Engagement Appreciation Award for her impact in the UNH Manchester community.
Favorite Manchester restaurant?
Osaka on Elm Street! I love their sushi and green salad. It’s a cozy spot, and they Doordash!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Back to Iceland. I went as part of a class at UNH Manchester in 2023, and it was magical—wild, invigorating, unforgettable. I need to go back and make sure it was really that cool and not just me!
We’d be surprised to know that...
I grew up on a farm!
Summer’s advice for new students:
“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The support systems are here. You just have to reach for them. You’ll be surprised how far they’ll take you.”
