Navigating the college application process can feel overwhelming, but with a clear plan and the right resources, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goals. Whether you’re planning to attend a local school like UNH Manchester or exploring other options, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this exciting next step.

1. Research your college options

Start by making a list of colleges that interest you and align with your academic and personal goals. Visit college websites to explore their programs, campus life and admissions requirements. Consider factors like location, size, tuition and available majors to narrow down your options.

2. Visit campuses and attend open houses

Once you have your college list, it's time to experience the school firsthand. Schedule a campus tour or visit an open house to meet current students, tour facilities and ask questions about academics and student life.

3. Understand admission requirements

Colleges have different admissions criteria, so be sure to review the application requirements for each school on your list. These often include:

  • A completed application (via the Common App or the school’s website)
  • High school transcripts
  • Standardized test scores (these are optional at UNH)
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement or essay
  • Application fee

4. Complete your application by the deadline

Make note of important deadlines, especially for early action or early decision options, and submit your applications as early as you can. Take your time filling out each section of your application, ensuring that all information is accurate. Most colleges have online application portals to help you keep track of your application status and any additional materials you need to submit.

5. Apply for financial aid and scholarships

College can be a significant investment, but financial aid and scholarships can help reduce costs. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for federal aid. Be sure to research scholarship opportunities and inquire about institutional scholarships offered by the colleges on your list.

You're automatically considered for a merit award when you apply to UNH Manchester by April 1 (fall semester) or November 15 (spring semester). See how affordable our college can be by getting a personalized cost estimate at app.meadowfi.com/unh.

6. Request recommendations and final transcripts

Choose teachers, counselors, or mentors who know you well and can speak to your strengths. Provide them with ample time to write thoughtful recommendations, and share any specific points you’d like them to highlight, such as your leadership skills or academic achievements. You'll also want to ask your guidance counselor to send official transcripts to the colleges you've applied to.

7. Review and respond to admission offers

Once you start receiving admission decisions, carefully review your options. Consider factors like financial aid packages, program offerings and campus culture. Once you’ve chosen a school, notify them of your decision and complete any remaining enrollment steps.

8. Celebrate!

Completing the college application process is a huge accomplishment, and you deserve to celebrate your hard work and dedication. Take a moment to acknowledge this milestone as you prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
