From Uncertainty to Opportunity: Elaina Saladino’s Transfer Journey to UNH Manchester

Not everyone follows a straight path, and that’s okay. Whether you’re unsure of your next step in your academic journey or wondering where your current path can take you, Elaina Saladino’s story is proof that it’s never too late to pivot toward something that feels right.
After graduating from Nashua High School South in 2022, Elaina earned her associate degree in business administration with a focus in Marketing from Nashua Community College. But even with a degree in hand, something felt like it was missing.
“After completing two years of community college and not feeling a pull towards the marketing path I was educated in, I decided to explore my passion for ASL,” says Elaina. “I'm so glad I've chosen this direction and this program.”
Finding the Right Fit at UNH Manchester
In 2024, Elaina transferred to UNH Manchester to pursue a bachelor’s degree in ASL/English Interpreting, with plans to graduate in 2028. Her decision was shaped by both personal passion and practical support.
“I chose UNH Manchester for the small and intimate classes, easy connection to faculty and resources, in-state tuition as well as grants and scholarships, and of course the ASL/English Interpreting program,” says Elaina. After meeting with the director of the program in fall of 2024, her decision was made. “Between [the director’s] welcoming and encouraging demeanor about the program and my financial aid offer I had no choice but to switch.”
Elaina was awarded the Merrimack Valley Scholarship, Wildcat Family Award, and an additional tuition grant, making her transition to UNH Manchester both affordable and empowering.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At UNH Manchester, Elaina found a degree program supported by a tight-knit community that encourages real-world experience and connection.
“Through the ASL/English Interpreting program, we do have required hours to spend with the community, but you're also encouraged to go above that and spend as much time as you can using and observing ASL especially with the Deaf community. These interactions and events are such great opportunities to grow, learn, and create new relationships.”
Bringing It All Together
Even though she changed her major, Elaina’s background in marketing still plays a meaningful role in her college experience. She now works as a peer advisor in the academic advising office, where she supports fellow students and puts her marketing skills to use.
“This is a very rewarding job because in addition to being there for students and helping shape some elements of their first-year experience, you also get to explore the marketing and social media side of advising. I get to see my work go out on social media, bulletin boards, and TV slides which as a previous marketing major is very rewarding.”
