Growing Through Service

“I served in the Navy for six years,” Julia shares. “My military experience helped me grow up very fast. I learned how to be independent and responsible because of all the expectations placed on me when I joined at 18 years old. It also helped me become more confident within myself.”

Julia’s decision to pursue college was rooted in long-term goals. “I always wanted to further my education,” she says.  “I saw the military as a steppingstone that would help me do that using their Post 911 GI-Bill.”

Finding the Right Fit

Julia chose UNH Manchester for its supportive and intimate learning environment. “I wanted a small campus that allowed a more intimate connection between the professors and students.” She adds, “I also started school at 24 and I knew a traditional college campus wouldn't be a proper fit for me at this stage in my life.”

UNH Manchester’s psychology program stood out for its interdisciplinary approach and hands-on learning. The program explores the biological and social elements of human behavior, offering students opportunities in research, counseling, and community-based projects. “I am studying psychology because I am interested in how the human mind works,” says Julia.  “I also believe it will help me pursue a career in law.”

Transitioning to College Life

Julia’s transition from military to academic life was smoother than expected. “I actually didn't have too many challenges when transitioning to college life,” she says. “I was already used to having to be organized and prompt when it came to deadlines. I think the only thing that was difficult for me was just being rusty on my writing and math skills since it had been seven years since I'd ever really had to write an essay.”

UNH Manchester’s flexible academic support helps students of all backgrounds build confidence and succeed in the classroom. Support from faculty and the Center for Academic Enrichment helped Julia regain her confidence. “My professors and the CAE have been very supportive when I have needed extra help on assignments.”

A Campus That Understands Veterans

UNH Manchester offers a range of military and veteran services, including streamlined access to education benefits, peer support networks, and a chapter of the Student Veterans of America. The campus’s commitment to small class sizes, personalized advising, and career-focused programs make it an ideal environment for veterans transitioning to civilian life.

“For other veterans considering college,” Julia says, “UNH Manchester is the perfect learning environment for Veterans.”
